Should You Paint Your Countertops?

Years ago, the project that put me on the map was painting my granite kitchen countertops to look like marble. This project was controversial to say the least. Some people were mad that I had painted over the granite (that's fair), some said it was like putting carpet over beautiful hardwoods (also fair), and some were absolutely in awe of how good it looked. I genuinely understood all of the criticism because granite is not a cheap material- and the countertops that I had were what some people dreamed of as is. They loved the look.

Unfortunately, they just weren't for me. I envisioned a lighter brighter kitchen, and these countertops felt very dark and heavy to me (plus they just always looked dirty). While my goal was to ultimately replace them, it was not going to be in the budget anytime soon. So I did what any good DIY gal would do and I painted them.

And they really did hold up pretty well over the years. Of course some chips and dings did happen- the corners were the most vulnerable spots for sure, and the inside edge of the countertop leading to the sink absolutely took the biggest beating. But I don't regret painting them at all. I would do it again in a heartbeat. You can watch the videos below to see how they looked after 3 years!
Even with the slight wear and tear they still looked beautiful...for years. So now my advice is this- if you are going to paint your countertops you need to know it can be a wonderful temporary solution. Something to tide you over for 3-5 years while you save up for what you really want. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone wanting a permanent fix- you will be disappointed. A year and a half ago we finally ripped out the marble painted granite and installed real marble (yes marble).

We actually started out shopping for quartz but just couldn't get past the look of real marble. It was so beautiful. We ended up purchashing 2 Azerocare Bianco Laza Fantastico slabs in hopes that the Azerocare treatment would make them more durable. The verdict is still out on that (but they look great so far). I'll keep you posted.
